Visually compelling surveys increase engagement and the willingness to complete additional surveys. Our research has shown panelists perceive visual surveys to be shorter and more fun to complete. One way to add more visual appeal to your next survey is by incorporating high quality images to questions. By embedding images, you can help panelists recall experiences they have had with your product or service (brand recall), ask them to evaluate the look of a new product, or just add interest to an otherwise simple question.
Panelists perceive visual surveys to be shorter and more fun to complete.
When discussing visual elements of questionnaires, it’s always better to show rather than tell. To that end, we have created a short survey that shows how adding visual elements can spice up a simple survey. Please click here to see the survey.
Tips to keep in mind when using images:
- Try to be consistent in the size and style of images that you use throughout a single survey. If you want to use images of real people interacting with your product, don’t then switch to cartoon or clip art images.
- Whenever possible, use images that reflect your brand or company values.
- Try to use images that are small enough that the panelist does not have to scroll down to answer the question.
- Mine your own resources: You may be able to get excellent images from your advertising or marketing teams.
- Use high quality images whenever possible.
- Remember to keep images sizes as small as possible to keep load times short – you don’t want panelists waiting while questions load. Try using JPEG files; they are often used for web applications because they tend to be small.
- Images are powerful - be sure that you are not inadvertently favoring or discouraging an answer because the image is more or less appealing than the other options.
